Sealand proudly holds the title of the smallest area to declare itself a sovereign nation. Reaching this unique micronation—and even staying overnight—is an adventure in itself. With all the hallmarks of a country, it boasts a constitution, a government, a single permanent resident, and a physical footprint, which is essentially a platform in the sea about the size of two tennis courts. It even has a stirring national anthem!
Once a British World War II naval fort, this principality lies approximately seven miles (11 km) off England's eastern coast. Today, it is ruled by Michael Bates, who has styled himself as its prince.
