On March 30, US President Donald Trump did not rule out the possibility of seeking a third term in the White House, despite the 22nd Amendment prohibiting it. During a phone interview with NBC News’ Kristen Welker, he claimed that "there are methods" to make it happen and stressed that he was "not joking."
Ratified in 1951, the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution states: "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice." Welker referenced a potential plan in which Vice President JD Vance could run in 2028 and later "pass the baton" back to Trump. "Well, that’s one. But there are others too," Trump replied, though he declined to provide further details.
Trump’s remarks have added to the ongoing speculation about his intentions. At times, he has appeared to joke about serving a third term, while in other moments he has spoken seriously about the possibility. His comments have fueled debate over whether he will attempt to extend his presidency beyond its intended four-year term. A recent survey shows that over half of Americans believe he will try.
