In this age of obsession with true crime, the corrupt guru has become a subgenre all of its own. From financial fraud to fake miracles, and most often, sexual abuse, the guru has become a highly suspect figure in modern society. At the same time, New Age spirituality is a booming business and more and more people are putting their trust in spiritual leaders as they search for meaning.
Despite their supposed enlightenment, it appears the guru is just as susceptible to the temptation to abuse their elevated positions as any other leader in society. The intoxicating power that comes from being declared a demigod by hundreds or even thousands of devoted disciples has proven to be a dangerous drug.
