- Babe's rescue wasn't the first time Cromwell worked with PETA. He superglued his hand to the counter of a midtown Manhattan Starbucks on May 10, 2022, to protest the chain’s extra charge for plant-based milk. The 82-year-old Oscar nominee really channeled his 'Succession' character Uncle Ewan as he sat on the Starbucks counter wearing a 'Free the Animals' T-shirt and read a statement criticizing the charge for vegan milk alternatives. "When will you stop raking in huge profits while customers, animals, and the environment suffer?” he demanded, as per the stream on Facebook, AP News reports. He later used a knife to scrape his hand off the counter, and police said there were no arrests.

Celebrity animal lovers who campaign for PETA
'Babe' actor James Cromwell works with PETA to rescue piglet from slaughter
© BrunoPress
PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is a non-profit organization from the US that has been fighting for animal rights for decades. In 2020, they celebrated their 40th anniversary with a star-studded virtual party that showed how many high-profile supporters they really have. PETA is famous for their provocative campaigns and protests, often enlisting celebrities to strip down for eye-catching anti-fur ads. Being part of a big PETA campaign now comes with a certain amount of prestige!
'Succession' star James Cromwell has been working with PETA for years and serves as an honorary director for the organization. Cromwell is also known for playing Farmer Hoggett in the beloved movies 'Babe' (1995) and 'Babe: Pig in the City' (1998), which follow the adventures of a young talking pig named Babe. When an injured piglet was found after falling off a truck headed to the slaughterhouse, who better than Cromwell to champion its safe delivery to an animal sanctuary?
PETA rescued the baby pig just before the Easter holidays and Cromwell was introduced to him on a video call, during which he christened him 'Babe.' PETA and Cromwell organized to have Babe transferred to the Indraloka Animal Sanctuary in Pennsylvania where he can recuperate and live in safety.
There are a rising number of vegans and animal rights activists in Hollywood, and they aren't shy about sharing their thoughts on animal cruelty. Click through this gallery to see some of PETA's most active celebrity representatives.
