Carmen Electra
- As a star who rose to fame as a '90s sex symbol, Carmen Electra said "it was like a no-brainer" to join the platform herself. "I just felt like, 'Yeah, I need to do this,'" Electra told People. "I, for once, have this opportunity to be my own boss and have my own creative vision to share with my fans without someone standing over me, telling me, 'Don't do this, don't do that. Cover up this.'" Her content reportedly includes beauty tutorials, vacation insights, swimwear and lingerie photos, as well as "more sexy, classy pictures and videos," where she noted she won't have to censor anything like on Instagram. She added this new platform will allow her to be "a little bit more intimate" with her fans in one-on-one interactions. "People are going to do what they want to do anyway with your photos, you might as well be in control of them and follow what you feel like doing inside," she explained.

The controversy
- On August 24, OnlyFans announced their decision to ban "any content containing sexually explicit conduct" as of October 2021. This decision was made following difficulties securing funding despite the phenomenal growth and potential of the platform. Investors were reportedly wary of associating themselves with a business built on adult content. The announcement was met with furious backlash as the adult content creators expressed their sense of betrayal. OnlyFans was built on the back of their work and they felt that they were being used and abandoned, many left without a reliable source of income. Less than a week after the announcement, OnlyFans decided to reverse the decision. A spokesperson said they no longer needed to enforce the ban "due to banking partners’ assurances that OnlyFans can support all genres of creators."

Rachel Dolezal's explicit OnlyFans photos leaked online
© Getty Images
The Covid-19 pandemic brought with it a number of new developments, and one of those was the increased interest in London-based content subscription service OnlyFans. The site has been around since 2016, but it really took off in early 2020, with CEO Tim Stokely telling BuzzFeed in May 2020 that the site was gaining 200,000 new users and 7,000-8,000 new content creators every 24 hours.
OnlyFans is best known as a platform for posting explicit, adult content, which fans can view by paying a subscription. While it is also used for other purposes such as promoting artists' work, adult content is by far its biggest export.
Rachel Dolezal, the infamous white woman who presented herself as Black and even worked in the NAACP, announced that she would be starting an OnlyFans in 2021, though she said her account would be “tasteful” and include “hair tutorials," “Monday motivation,” exercise content, and “foot pics,” reports MTV Australia. Well, some of Dolezal's content was leaked on Twitter and there are certainly also naked photos. Naturally, the internet is having a field day.
