London’s blue plaques: the famous names they honor

Next time you're in London, look out for

English Heritage blue plaques. A blue plaque is a permanent marker installed in a public place to commemorate a link between that location and a famous person, event, or former building on the site. Recently, English Heritage announced Hollywood star Audrey Hepburn and T. Rex front man Marc Bolan will be honored with blue plaques in London. Hepburn, who was born in Belgium, will be commemorated in Mayfair, the area where she lived while landing her Academy Award-winning role in 'Roman Holiday' (1953).

Marc Bolan, who played a key role in the glam rock movement, became famous for his theatrical style and musical innovation, producing hits like 'Get It On' and 'Ride a White Swan.'English Heritage will also recognize the achievements of novelist Barbara Pym, artist Graham Sutherland, ballerina Alicia Markova, and Jamaican author Una Marson.

Across the UK capital, about 950 blue plaques on properties honor the men and women who have lived or worked in them—artists, actors, writers, musicians, novelists, architects, scientists, and politicians, among many others from all walks of life.
