"Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" was the 1840 US presidential slogan of William Henry Harrison. Tippecanoe was a famous 1811 battle in which Harrison defeated Tecumseh. The slogan was also the title of a popular and influential campaign song, the score of which is pictured here.
"We Polked you in '44, We shall Pierce you in '52" was the slogan of Franklin Pierce; the '44 referred to the 1844 election of fellow Democrat James K. Polk as president. Pictured is the campaign poster for the Pierce/King ticket. William King became vice president.
"We'll Buck 'em in '56" was the slogan chosen by James Buchanan, the expression playing on "Old Buck," the nickname associated with his last name.
One of several slogans created to publicize Abraham Lincoln's bid for the presidency, "The Union must and shall be preserved!" served as a warning after Southern leaders had threatened secession if the Republican candidate, Lincoln, won the 1860 election.
"The Union and the Constitution" was the rallying cry used by Lincoln during his reelection campaign throughout 1863. Vice President Andrew Johnson became president after Lincoln's assassination in 1864.
The integrity of the Union was also played upon by Ulysses S. Grant, who insisted that "In Union is Peace." His running mate was Schuyler Colfax. Grant's slogan as he ran for reelection in 1872 was a clever play on words: "Grant US Another Term."
This 1888 campaign kerchief of Benjamin Harrison and Levi P. Morton with an inscribed red shield in a field of red and white stars features the campaign slogan "Protection & Prosperity."
William McKinley is seen holding the US flag while standing on a gold coin held aloft by a group of men in this 1898 campaign poster with its message, "Prosperity at Home, Prestige Abroad." McKinley was assassinated on September 6, 1901, six months into his second term.
"A Square Deal For All" is what William Howard Taft promised during his US presidential campaign in 1908.
Woodrow Wilson's 1912 election campaign team predicted their man to win by declaring, "Wilson, That's All!"
Warren G. Harding's 1920 election campaign theme tapped into isolationist and anti-immigrant sentiment after the First World War by declaring "America First." The Republican National Committee also published a list of Harding's achievements in politics under the title 'Here's what HARDING did for you."
"Who but Hoover?" was the campaign slogan adopted by Herbert Hoover in 1928 during his bid for the White House.
Despite campaigning in the depths of the Great Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1932 US presidential election slogan pledged that "Happy Days Are Here Again." His reelection campaign slogan read: "Forward with Roosevelt."
"We are going to win this war and the peace that follows," was President Roosevelt's campaign slogan in the midst of the Second World War.
"I'm just wild about Harry" was one of the many presidential slogans used by Harry S. Truman in 1948. Another was "True-Mans World Needs Truman."
Dwight D. Eisenhower's 1952 presidential campaign slogan, "I Like Ike," made its way onto billboards, posters, buttons, pins, and even automobile bumpers.
"Leadership for the 60's" was a popular slogan used by John F. Kennedy during his bid for the White House. "We Can Do Better" and "A time for greatness" were also employed as campaign themes.
Lyndon B. Johnson had assumed the presidency after JFK's assassination in 1963. During the 1964 US election campaign, Johnson was kept in the White House with help from the well-known campaign slogan "All the way with LBJ."
"Nixon's the One" was perhaps the most popular of Richard Nixon's 1968 presidential campaign slogans. "Nixon Now" was equally compelling in 1972.
The 1976 presidential campaign saw Jimmy Carter and his running mate Walter Mondale use "Leaders, for a Change" as an effective slogan.
"Let's make America great again" was famously used in Ronald Reagan's 1980 presidential campaign. It's a phrase used since by Bill Clinton and Donald Trump during their bids for the White House.
George H.W. Bush promised a "Kinder, Gentler Nation" during his 1988 presidential campaign.
"For People, for a Change" was the 1992 US presidential slogan of choice for Bill Clinton.
The phrase "Compassionate Conservatism" was popularized when George W. Bush adopted it as one of his key slogans during his 2000 presidential campaign against Al Gore.
Fittingly, Al Gore's presidential campaign slogan in 2000 was "Leadership for the New Millennium."
Presidential hopeful John Kerry made a point of addressing the nation by advocating for "A Stronger America" during his 2004 bid for the White House.
"Change We Need" was one of Barack Obama's campaign slogans during the 2008 race for the White House. He also used "Change We Can Believe In." The popular chant, "Yes We Can," and the iconic "Hope" poster, helped propel Obama to become the first African-American president in US history.
Though popularized by Donald Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign, the political slogan "Make America Great Again!" was first used during Ronald Reagan's bid for the White House back in 1980. Trump's campaign team turned it into a pop culture phenomenon, and he's sending out the same message in 2024 as he makes a pitch for another term in office.
"Build Back Better" was the slogan used most by Joe Biden's campaign team during the 2020 presidential race for the White House. His 2024 reelection campaign slogan was "Let's Finish the Job," before he abandoned the re-election bid.
