Defense mechanisms are part of our human psychology. The world makes a lot of demands on our time and energy, and we develop ways to cope when we have a lot going on at once. Compartmentalization is a coping mechanism of the psyche, which helps it to function in certain circumstances. However, when it's overused or is a completely unconscious response, it can act as a buffer between a person and their ability to process challenging life experiences.
