As the new school year begins, head lice cases tend to surge. Every year, up to 12 million American children between the ages of 3 and 11 are affected by these blood-sucking parasites. Despite their small size, lice can cause significant discomfort, itching, and even the occasional infection. Centuries of human evolution and modern science have done little to cut down on the abundance of these pesky creatures, but at least we're becoming far more knowledgeable about how to tackle them and potentially avoid distress.
