Texas megachurch leader Robert Morris steps down over exposure of past child abuse
LIFESTYLE Religion
Texas pastor Robert Morris, who has an estimated net worth of US$117 million, has resigned from his position on the Board of Elders of Gateway Church. The Dallas-based megachurch accepted his resignation following the revelation that he had an inappropriate relationship with a 12-year-old child. Morris admitted to the crime in a statement that read, “When I was in my early twenties, I was involved in inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady in a home where I was staying...This behavior happened on several occasions over the next few years." The woman in question claims that the abuse took place between 1982 and 1987. He reportedly asked the survivor and her family for forgiveness in 1989 and stepped down from his ministry position at Shady Grove Church. The family said that while they forgave him, they did not support his return to ministry at Gateway Church. Morris is pictured with Donald Trump at a 2020 roundtable event with faith leaders held at the Gateway Church campus in Dallas.
Being a pastor is not for everyone, and indeed not all men and women of God become financially successful. Some, however, do manage to earn a lot of money and amass large fortunes for doing God's work. These pastors are mostly based in the United States and African nations like Nigeria and South Africa. They own megachurches with enormous congregations, they have ministries spread across the globe, their own television shows, and sell millions of books worldwide.
