The Kardashians might be the most famous family on Earth. Their reality show is one of the longest running and most viewed in the US. Many wonder why they are even famous, while the constant fights, break-ups, backstabbing, and all around bad behavior have kept the show going for 19 seasons.

In one notorious episode, the family are out celebrating and Kris Jenner asks their waiter to stop serving a drunk Scott Disick. Disick famously responded by shoving a US$100 bill into the waiter’s mouth. Even though he and Khloe Kardashian separated, he still frequently appeared on the show. Viewers love to hate him.

Add that to multiple marriages that lasted less than three months, several stints in rehab, sex tapes, and a mother selling explicit photos of her daughter, and you've got quite the family.

'19 Kids and Counting' -

The Duggar family has certainly had their fair share of bad press. After '19 Kids and Counting' was canceled in 2015 due to Josh Duggar's molestation charges, the spin-off 'Counting On' started airing, focusing on the family's older children.  Now, however, the spin-off has been canceled amid Josh's child porn case. TLC made a statement to E! News that said the network "feels it is important to give the Duggar family the opportunity to address their situation privately."

Josh Duggar was arrested in April, and appeared in court after pleading not guilty to receiving and possessing material depicting the sexual abuse of children under 12. He was released in May but not allowed to return home to his family. If convicted, Duggar reportedly faces up to 20 years in prison and fines up to US$250,000 on each count.

'19 Kids and Counting' -

The Duggars are a family of devout baptists who avoid birth control, claiming God will decide how many children they have. Apparently, that’s a lot! At the time their reality TV show was airing they had 19 children and no plan to stop.

As if the family weren’t already controversial, their show was canceled in 2015 when it was revealed that the oldest son Josh had molested several young girls when he was a teenager, fifteen years earlier. Some of them were his own sisters.

At the time of the abuse, Jim Bob was running for senator. One of his platforms was that crimes similar to his son's should be treated as capital crimes. Jim Bob and his wife were allegedly aware of what he had done and chose to cover it up.

'Hogan Knows Best' -

The series following Hulk Hogan and his family ended in scandal and a messy divorce. The WWE star began airing the show in 2005, but by 2007 everything had taken a nosedive and the show was cancelled.

Hogan’s 17-year-old son Nick ended up with eight months in jail for reckless driving. He crashed while drunk driving at 100 miles (160 km) an hour, leaving his friend severely brain damaged.

Hogan and his wife Linda split when she discovered he was having an affair with his daughter’s best friend. Daughter Brooke was the only one to come out of the series untouched by scandal, and went on to have her own spin-off called ‘Brooke Knows Best.’

Ozzy Osbourne was one of the most notoriously reckless rock stars in history. He heavily abused drugs and alcohol for decades while fronting the band Black Sabbath. He often comments that it’s a miracle he’s still alive.

The reality show about his family started airing in 2005. The majority of scenes show Ozzy wandering around with the gait and demeanor of a man decades his senior. He suffers from Parkin’s syndrome, a disease similar to Parkinson’s, and has some mild hearing loss. His most common line on the show is "What?"

'Being Bobby Brown' only lasted for one season, and it’s no surprise that the ratings were dismal. Brown is considered a bit of a villain by many since his marriage to Whitney Houston. She was America’s sweetheart and he was seen as the bad boy who corrupted her.

There were infidelities, rampant drug use, and rumors of emotional and physical abuse. Houston’s career started to go off the rails as her addiction made her unreliable and seriously impacted the quality of her performance. The pair divorced in 2009 and she tragically drowned in her bathtub a few years later.

The reality show focusing on Bobby Brown’s family life was most likely intended to improve his image, but it was way off the mark. His crass comments about his wife and his narcissistic personality stole the show.

'Here Comes Honey Boo Boo' -

Alana Thompson, also known as Honey Boo Boo, captured hearts when she appeared on the TLC show ‘Toddlers & Tiaras’ at the age of five.

She went on to get her own reality TV series following the life of her family. The folksy humor provided by Honey Boo Boo and her mother Mama June gave the show a lighthearted appeal. Sadly this came to an end when the show was canceled amid rumors that Mama June was dating a convicted child molester.

'Here Comes Honey Boo Boo' -

The family didn’t leave the spotlight, however, and snagged a new reality show called ‘Mama June: From Not to Hot.’ In the most recent season it was revealed that Mama June has a drug addiction and was arrested for possession of crack cocaine.

Anna Nicole Smith is a tragic figure in pop culture history. At every stage of her life she seemed to be doing whatever it took to improve her situation.

This is aptly summarized in the cartoon intro to her show: she went from frying chicken to stripping, she married an 89-year-old billionaire and lived the high life, then he died so she attempted to claim his estate in court but failed instead ended up doing a reality TV show.

It’s well known that Smith sadly died of an accidental overdose in 2007. A lesser known fact is that her 20-year-old son Daniel, who appeared on the show, also died of an accidental overdose one year prior. The bubbly, frivolous lifestyle portrayed on TV was not the reality for this family.

'Duck Dynasty' -

On the surface, 'Duck Dynasty' is a relatively wholesome TV show about a kooky family who runs a duck hunting business, with bearded patriarch Phil Robertson at the lead.

In 2013, Robertson did an interview with GQ in which he made a number of offensive comments about homosexuality and Black history. He was subsequently suspended from the show.

However, he was reinstated within a matter of weeks. The network A&E made a statement saying that Robertson regretted using "coarse language" and that his beliefs were misinterpreted. The show never regained its momentum after this incident and was canceled in 2016.

This MTV series followed the lives of several wealthy young women living it up in Los Angeles. While the show was centered around the protagonist Lauren Conrad, the relationship between Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt stole the show.

Similar to Scott Disick in the Kardashians, viewers despised Spencer Pratt but couldn’t get enough of him. During his time on the show he cut his sister out of his life, alienated Heidi from her friends, and feuded with Heidi’s sister and mother. His best meltdowns can be found on YouTube.

The couple have stayed together for almost 10 years and now have a child called Gunner. They continued to make appearances on reality TV shows such as ‘I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!’ and ‘Celebrity Big Brother.’ They generally end up fighting with every other contestant.
