A new study by Deloitte and Google examines how global tourism has changed since 1990 and predicts that Spain will overtake France as the world’s most visited destination by 2040.
In 2025, France retained its title as the world’s most visited country, welcoming a record 102 million international tourists, according to the country’s economy ministry. Foreign visitors accounted for 743 million overnight stays, with 76% coming from Europe. Spain was close behind, welcoming 96.8 million international tourists in 2025, up 3.2% from the 94 million visitors recorded in 2024.
The study projects Spain will welcome 110 million international visitors annually by 2040, overtaking France, which is expected to receive 105 million.
