Five passengers and six crew members were injured on November 12, when a Lufthansa flight traveling from Buenos Aires to Frankfurt hit severe turbulence.
The issue occurred when the plane flew over the Atlantic and entered an intertropical convergence zone. Although the turbulence was severe, it was brief and most injuries were minor. A spokesperson for Lufthansa wanted to make it clear that the safety of the flight was never at any risk and that all injured parties were treated immediately.
Turbulence is a challenging weather phenomenon that can frighten even the most frequent of flyers. And while modern commercial airliners are fully equipped to withstand all types of turbulence, it can still be an uncomfortable and occasionally dangerous experience.
So, what exactly is turbulence, how is it caused, and what measures can be taken to reduce its effects? Click through this gallery to find out.
