The world's largest Art Deco monument, it took French-Polish sculptor Paul Landowski nine years to finish. The masterpiece was completed in 1931 and needs regular refurbishments to protect against lightning strikes.

Christ the King, Poland -

Officially the world's biggest Christ statue, the monument in Świebodzin, Poland, was inaugurated in 2010. It stands at 52.5 meters (172 feet), including its crown and pedestal.

The statue itself measures 33 meters: one meter for each year of Christ's life, according to its creators. In 2018, locals were incensed to see WiFi antennae had been installed in the crown—they were later removed.

Jesus Buntu Burake, Indonesia -

The Roman Catholic statue of Jesus in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, competes with the Polish Christ for the title of "World's Tallest Christ Statue." It stands 40 meters (130 feet) tall, some 1,700 meters (about 5,575 feet) above sea level.

Said to have been inspired by the version in Brazil, the Portuguese Cristo was completed in 1940. It looks out over Lisbon from the opposite bank of the Tagus river.

A major tourist attraction in Maratea in southern Italy, the 'Cristo Redentore di Maratea' is a magnificent marble statue crafted by Italian sculptor Bruno Innocenti in 1965.

Heart of Jesus, Romania -

Looking like it's been beamed down from another planet, the Heart of Jesus is a stainless steel sculpture near Lupeni Hill, Transylvania. Finished in 2011, the mighty statue stands 950 meters  (3,116 feet) above sea level, and internal staircases allow visitors to enjoy the view.

Christ of Monteagudo, Spain -

This mountaintop sculpture outside the small town of Murcia, Spain, was unveiled in 1951 on the site where a 1926 incarnation of the statue once stood before being demolished in 1936. This version stands 34 meters (112 feet) tall and is visible for miles around.

Christ of Havana, Cuba -

The Cuban Christ looks out over the bay from a hilltop perch in the country's capital. It stands around 20 meters (66 feet) high, and was sculpted from imported Italian marble in the 1950s. Years in the making, it was inaugurated in 1958.

Christ statues abound in South America, and the 'Cristo de la Concordia' in Cochabamba trumped the Rio version in the height stakes when it was erected in 1994.

It's mere centimeters taller than Rio's Christ, at a pinch over 33 meters (108 feet). The statue is a striking figure on the landscape of the Andean town of Cochabamba.

Cutting a more maudlin figure than many of its Christ statue counterparts, the 1931-built Christ of the Knoll stands on a small hill in northern Spain.

Christ of the Abyss, Italy -

While most Christ statues stand on lofty hilltop perches, a few sit deep underwater. The Christ of the Abyss, off the coast of Portofino, Italy, sits 15 meters (50 feet) below sea level. It was built in 1954 in honor of Dario Gonzatti, a renowned diver who died at the spot several years earlier.

If ever a Christ statue had a paradise location, it's this one. Christ the Savior sits atop Pilgrimage Island in the appropriately-named Hundred Islands National Park, and attracts many religious visitors as well as camera-wielding tourists.

In the heart of Hungary's Tokaj wine region, surrounded by vineyards, the 'Blessing Jesus' was erected in 2015. At just 8.5 meters (27.8 feet), this Jesus may be smaller than some, but it's the largest in the country, and already a revered religious monument.

On the border between Argentina and Chile, the Andean Christ statue was erected in 1904, in honor of the peaceful resolution of a border dispute between the two South American nations.

Orava Christ, Slovakia -

Slovakia's answer to Rio de Janeiro's Christ statue is this arms-aloft hilltop figure in the small village of Klin, Orava region. Built in 2008, it's a great source of pride to locals, and the gorgeous views add to the appeal for tourists.

Christ the Protector, Brazil -

The Christ statue in Encantado, southern Brazil, will be several meters taller than its Rio counterpart.

At 43 meters (140 feet) tall, and with interior viewing platforms, it's a mighty feat of engineering.
