Chances are you'd never heard of Hart Island in New York City before the coronavirus pandemic. But this nondescript island in Long Island Sound made headline news in 2020 after it became a mass burial ground for hundreds of victims of COVID-19. But Hart Island has been the final resting place for more than one million unknown individuals since the late 19th century, a fact few people are aware of.
