In response to President-elect Donald Trump’s concerns that the Panama Canal is under Chinese control, House Republicans have introduced a bill to repurchase the critical waterway.
On January 9, the Panama Canal Repurchase Act was introduced by Representative Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.), who said "China’s interest in and presence around the canal is a cause for concern. America must project strength abroad.” Johnson’s office also noted that "more than 10,000 ships use the Panama Canal each year, generating billions of dollars of tolls which would economically benefit America." The bill has 15 other Republican co-sponsors.
The canal holds strategic importance for the United States. It is estimated that around 72% of all vessels that travel through the Panama Canal are coming to or from an American port, and it acts as a key transit point for the US Coast Guard and Department of Defense vessels. If the US were to lose access to the canal, their vessels would have to travel an additional 8,000 miles (about 12,875 km) around South America.
When asked if he could assure the world that he would not use "military or economic coercion" to get his way, Trump responded, "No, I can't assure you of either of those two … We gave the Panama Canal to Panama. We didn't give it to China. And they've abused it." The Panamanian government has denied that China is controlling the Panama Canal, which the US relinquished in 1999.
