27. Myanmar -

Myanmar has been widely criticized for the ongoing genocide against the Muslim Rohingya people living there. In addition, the country has been in a state of civil unrest for several years which culminated in a military coup in 2021, following which even further restrictions were placed on freedom of speech and independent media.

The Vatican City is a tiny nation within the Italian capital of Rome that houses the Pope and the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. The Vatican's reputation for covering up abuse scandals within the church are a major reason for the country's poor rating.

25. Qatar -

Qatar is a country known for its human rights violations, gender inequality, and massively imbalanced distribution of wealth. A spotlight was shone on Qatar's downfalls when the 2022 World Cup was hosted there. Vulnerable migrants were put to work on building projects for the event and thousands were killed in the process.

24. Indonesia -

In 1998, political unrest and the growing Asian financial crisis triggered a series of protests across Indonesia. A devastating wave of anti-Chinese ethnic violence broke out and more than a thousand people were killed, while more than 100 Chinese women were assaulted during the riots. Racial tensions still exist even 20 years after this dark event in Indonesian history.

4. Russia - The US and Russia have had tense relations over the years, with the West demonizing its current sitting president Vladimir Putin. The outbreak of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 only made things worse.

3. China - Beijing, China, was the site of the tragic Tiananmen Square protests in 1989 in which the Chinese People's Liberation Army killed thousands of its own civilians to protect Communist China. The outbreak of COVID also reinforced anti-Chinese sentiments around the world.

2. United States - The US has long been considered a bully. With a history of controversial presidents, and their tendency to start wars and "stick their noses where they do not belong,” it is no wonder that America and Americans are loathed by many around the world.

1. North Korea -

Perhaps the country with the most severe human rights violations in the world is North Korea. Citizens are subject to barbaric laws such as prohibited freedom of expression and risk being sent to labor camps if they fall out of line.
