No fear -

The quokka's lack of fear of humans and the small size of their natural habitat makes them vulnerable to becoming endangered as a species.

Although the little critters are not on the endangered list, they are considered at risk.

Shriek - Quokkas have sharp teeth and will shriek if cornered or attacked or if they feel threatened or provoked.

Locals - Although tourists like quokkas many locals that must live with them are not so keen. Quokkas are bold and will enter buildings such as homes and restaurants.

OMG - If a quokka mother is threatened by a predator she will often throw her baby on the ground to distract the predator and save her own life.

Baby - Quokka babies gestate in the womb for only one month and then move into the mother's pouch. The baby lives with the mother for several months and at a year they are ready to mate.

Birth rate - A female quokka gives birth to one or two joeys a year.

Name - Dutch Captain Willem de Vlamingh, mistook the marsupials for large rats when he arrived in 1696. He named the island “Rattennest” (Dutch for “Rat’s Nest”), which was later adapted to Rottnest.

Smiling - Contrary to popular belief, the quokka is not smiling at you, when they get hot, they pant, very much like dogs to keep cool.

Lifespan - The average lifespan of a Quokka is 10 years.

Regurgitator - Quokkas tend to eat bark, grass, stems, and leaves. The first time they consume food they swallow it whole. Then they regurgitate the food and eat it again. This allows them to extract more nutrition.

Peace out - Quokkas do not tend to fight with their own over food or mates and are generally peaceful in their groups.

Cruelty - Due to the quokka's tame ways, there have been a series of cruel incidents involving bad people and the unsuspecting animals.

Swim time - A New Zealand man was found guilty of animal cruelty and fined $2000 for trying to prove that quokkas were good swimmers by throwing an animal into the ocean. It swam back safe, but not the point.

Kick - Last March, a 21-year-old man Perth man, Corey Douglas James, was fined $3000 for filming his friend chase and kick a quokka.

UDL - Last year a man was also filmed pouring a vodka UDL into a quokka’s mouth, which could have killed the animal.

Bad men - In 2015, two French tourists chose to remain in jail instead of paying a $4000 fine for trying to set fire to a quokka.

Kick - A teenager was fined $2500 for kicking a quokka two metres into the air.

Jail - Cruelty to the protected animals can result in fines up to $50,000 and in some cases jail.
