For those intrigued by civilian life in North Korea, Starbucks now offers a unique opportunity to glimpse the world’s most secretive country while enjoying a cup of coffee.
Starbucks Coffee Korea Co. has opened a new riverbank café at an observatory tower in Gimpo, South Korea. From this location, visitors can get a view of daily life in Gaepung County, just across the border, according to an event invitation from the city government. Known as Hill 154, the observatory holds historical significance as a key battleground during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.
Similarly, photographer Damir Sagolj has captured the surreal essence of daily life in North Korea through a series of striking images. Taken from across the border in China, the photos contrast the vibrant lifestyle in China with the stark uniformity of North Korean villages along the Yalu River.
