The first Tiny Desk Concert was in 2008. after NPR Music’s editor Stephen Thomson left a bar frustrated that he couldn’t hear the music over the noise of the crowd. He joked that folk singer Laura Gibson should perform at his desk in their office, and one month later, organized to do just that.
Since then, NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts have grown to be one of the most important music institutions today. During the pandemic, NPR Music has been hosting Tiny Desk (Home) Concerts, where artists perform at home to abide by the rules of lockdown/quarantine.
Olivia Rodrigo got creative with her choice of venue and picked a place usually loathed by people: the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles). Perhaps it's fitting for the singer who did, after all, rocket to fame with her song 'Drivers License.'
Apparently the production company actually paid US$2,383 to use the DMV office in Glendale, California, as it was filmed after normal business hours and covered overtime pay for a few employees who had to stay late, TMZ reports.
