The violin is one of the world’s most popular musical instruments. It came to prominence in the early 16th century, when it found favor among commoners and the nobility. The instrument as we know it today emerged during this period in northern Italy, an area where some of the most famous violin makers, or luthiers, honed their craft. Cremona became especially synonymous with the production of violins: Antonio Stradivari was born in the city. So, too, was another master luthier, Nicola Amati. The violin remains a democratic instrument, universal and versatile. Indeed, everything from Western and Indian classical music to bluegrass and jazz would be unimaginable today without the violin.
