Would you like to have Denzel Washington whispering sweet nothings into your ear? Maybe you'd like to have Samuel L. Jackson by your side when it's time to insult someone back. It's safe to assume we'd all love listening to Morgan Freeman telling us bedtime stories until we fall asleep. Or perhaps listen to James Earl Jones's voice, when you need that extra motivation to do something.
It turns out we might be able to listen to James Earl Jones's voice ad infinitum as the famed voice of Darth Vader, despite the actor himself stepping away from the role. In an interview with Vanity Fair, 'Star Wars' sound supervising editor Matthew Wood said the 91-year-old "was looking into winding down this... character," though the character will live on. That's because Jones has reportedly granted permission for Disney and Lucasfilm to use artificial intelligence and archival recordings to clone his voice. Apparently it sounds quite good, too, as Jones' family told Wood they were very pleased with the finished product by Ukrainian-based voice cloning company Respeecher.
Jones voiced Darth Vader in the original 1977 'Star Wars' film, as well as in 'The Empire Strikes Back' and 'Return of the Jedi.' He's also reprised the role in 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' (2016) and 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' (2019).
