Hollywood has come a long way, but it still has a long road ahead towards equality and inclusiveness. Casting choices are a particular sore spot, as white actors are cast as people of color, able-bodied actors are cast as disabled characters, and cisgender actors are cast in transgender roles—putting marginalized actors out of work. Even films aiming to show an underrepresented community stumble with issues like colorism—prejudice or discrimination against darker skin tones within the same racial group.
British director Emerald Fennell, known for movies like 'Promising Young Woman' (2020) and 'Saltburn' (2023), is taking on the Emily Brontë classic, 'Wuthering Heights.' The book has been adapted for the big screen on several occasions already, but fans were excited to see what modern touch Fennell would bring. When the casting of the lead roles was announced, many were less than pleased. Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi will play the emotionally complex roles of Cathy and Heathcliff. Not only are the two Australian actors a little too picture-perfect for the psychologically tortured characters, but Heathcliff is described as dark-skinned and Romani in the book. While the character has frequently been played by white actors in the past, the 2011 adaptation cast black actor James Howson as Heathcliff. Fennell has not yet addressed the accusations of whitewashing.
