President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to begin dismantling the US Department of Education, a move that aligns with long-standing conservative efforts to shift educational authority to states and local communities. While fully abolishing the department would require congressional approval, the order instructs McMahon to take "all necessary steps" to facilitate its closure in order to "return education authority to the states."

The administration has already cut the department’s workforce in half, signaling an aggressive push toward its ultimate dissolution.

The decision raises concerns about the future of public education, student loans, and federal oversight. The administration has not clarified how key functions—such as student loan management, special education funding, and civil rights enforcement—would be handled at the state level. With no clear roadmap, educators, parents and students are left questioning how the transition will impact millions of students nationwide.
