On January 15, 2009, in what's been described as "the most successful ditching in aviation history," US Airways Flight 1549 made an emergency landing in New York's Hudson River. The plane's captain, Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, was hailed a national hero for his quick thinking in the cockpit, which saved the lives of all those on board.
The incident was later recreated as a film directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Tom Hanks as Sullenberger. But what was it really like on that fateful day, and why did the plane's pilots have to make such a drastic life-or-death decision?
