Wildfires continue to rage in Los Angeles despite some progress in containing the deadly Palisades and Eaton fires burning on opposite sides of the city. Local firefighters are receiving support from crews arriving from eight other states, Canada, and Mexico.
The LA County medical examiner reported on January 12 that the death toll had risen to 24, while officials said at least 16 people are still missing. Sixteen of the mortal victims were found in the Eaton fire zone, while eight were discovered in the Palisades area, as three major fires continue to burn around Los Angeles.
Although things are calming down, weather forecasters in California warn that strong winds fueling the Los Angeles fires will pick up again this week, as crews work to control three wildfires.
The wildfires are on track to be among the costliest in US history. The private forecaster Accuweather raised its preliminary estimate of financial losses from the blazes to between US$250-$275 billion (€230-€255 billion).
