Out-of-control wildfires continue to sweep through parts of Los Angeles, resulting in at least 10 deaths, destroying hundreds of buildings, and forcing evacuation orders for nearly 180,000 residents across the county.
According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the Pacific Palisades, Eaton, and Kenneth fires are still burning. The cause of the blazes remains unknown and is still under investigation, although a man has been arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with the Kenneth fire. Approximately 5,300 structures have been destroyed by the Pacific Palisades fire, making it the most destructive wildfire in Los Angeles history, while another 5,000 structures have been leveled by the Eaton fire just outside the city.
The insurance industry fears this could become one of the costliest wildfire outbreaks in US history, with insured losses projected to exceed $8 billion (€7.4 billion) due to the high value of properties in the path of the fires.
