José Mujica, Uruguay’s popular former president and global liberal icon, has announced that he is dying of cancer. The cancer that he previously revealed was in his esophagus has now spread to his liver, and he has chosen not to pursue any further treatment.
He shared the diagnosis in what he said would be his last interview, and described himself as “doomed.” The article in Búsqueda, a weekly Uruguayan news magazine, further noted that he had tears in his eyes when he said, “Honestly, I am dying.” He then made one final request to be left alone. “Don’t ask me for more interviews or anything else … My cycle is over.” He went on to say that he will be devoting the “final stage” of his life to his farm, where he likes to grow chrysanthemums with his wife.
As the 40th President of Uruguay, Mujica is known for transforming his nation into one of the healthiest and most socially liberal democracies in Latin America. He is now 89, and despite being ill since April 2024, he was still appearing on the political stage and campaigning for his leftwing coalition up until last fall.
In his interview, Mujica said, “Life is a beautiful adventure and a miracle.” Read through this gallery to learn all about his life and find out how exactly a political prisoner ended up becoming such a popular president.
