South Korean lawmakers voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol after his failed attempt to impose martial law, which triggered widespread protests nationwide.
He was suspended after members of Yoon's own People Power Party (PPP) joined the opposition in voting against him. Thousands of anti-Yoon protesters celebrated outside the National Assembly on Saturday evening after the impeachment motion was passed.
"I will take your criticism, praise, and support to the heart and do my best for the country until the end," Yoon said.
Yoon tried to impose military rule after months of political gridlock, arguing it was needed to stop alleged North Korean attempts to weaken his government. However, Yoon has no significant public support, as strong backing for his impeachment has emerged, with recent polls showing that three-quarters of South Koreans wanted him to step down.
