Peter and Paul -

The apostles Peter and Paul arrived in Rome during Nero’s reign (circa 54–68 CE), and found a small but active Christian community. On the weekends, the two preached in synagogues and in homes, strengthening early Christian foundations in the city.

Apostles -

Peter and Paul were two of the 12 apostles of Jesus, dedicated in discipleship to him. Peter was a fisherman before meeting Jesus, while Paul was a former persecutor turned missionary.

The Great Fire -

Rome’s Great Fire in 64 CE provided Nero with a reason to persecute Christians by blaming them for the disaster. Brutal public executions were organized, and Peter and Paul likely perished in these gruesome spectacles.

Upside-down crucifixion -

Tradition states that Peter was crucified upside down by his own choice, since he did not think himself worthy to die in the same fashion as Jesus. Peter’s death is a powerful story in Christianity, but the events surrounding his burial are far less clear and continue to perplex historians.

Burial mystery -

The ‘Acts of Peter and Paul’ (an early apocryphal text written around 400 CE) claims Peter was buried in the Vatican area. Mysterious figures supposedly helped bury him secretly near a terebinth tree in the ancient necropolis.

Simple beginnings -

Peter’s initial grave was humble and unassuming, but the growing Christian community elevated it into a pilgrimage site. To preserve the site, additional stones were added, and later a commemorative monument was constructed.

The testimony of Gaius -

Gaius, an early Church figure, wrote around 200 CE about the “trophies” of Peter and Paul (the word “trophy” was used for tombs made for Christian martyrs). Gaius indicated two locations of trophies: Peter’s tomb on Vatican Hill and Paul’s on the Via Ostiense.

Petrine theory -

As the Church of Rome grew larger and claimed its primacy over other churches, the interest in Peter’s tomb grew as well. In the 2nd century, a theory was developed which stated that Peter’s authority was granted to him by Jesus Christ himself, since he was given the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven.

The Trophy of Gaius -

In the 2nd century, a monument (later known as the Trophy of Gaius) was built over Peter’s supposed tomb, but Peter’s original burial site and the Trophy of Gaius became obscured even further in the coming centuries.

Constantine’s grand basilica -

Emperor Constantine I (306–337 CE) chose Peter’s burial site for a new basilica to solidify Christianity’s prestige. The immense structure was meant to be a symbol of faith and power, and it rested on a platform over the necropolis.

Necropolis preservation -

The tombs and mausoleums in the area were protected by sacred law. During construction, the tombs were filled in with earth rather than removed entirely so that they could be preserved. The basilica was built on top.

Layered -

During the basilica’s construction, the Memoria Petri was built over the Trophy of Gaius. The only known visual depiction of the monument appears on a 5th-century box called the Samagher casket.

Renaissance reconstruction -

In the 16th century, St. Peter’s Basilica was rebuilt in its current Renaissance style. This new version involved adding another platform and creating vaults that separated the old and new structures, forming the Vatican Grottoes. Many popes were later interred there.

Papal Altar -

The reconstruction of the basilica also involved the creation of the Papal Altar, which was built above the Memoria Petri. The columns of the altar were given the same design as those on the original memorial.

Excavations -

In 1939, Pope Pius XII’s project to open the Vatican Grottoes to the public led to archaeological excavations that uncovered Roman tombs. The findings provoked significant Church and academic interest, as many sought to confirm if Peter’s tomb truly lay beneath the altar.

Archaeological controversies -

The excavation was incredibly sensitive to the Church. Since the 16th century, Protestants have challenged the idea of Peter’s presence in Rome, and even the German priest Martin Luther openly doubted the claim. The Catholic Church faced pressure to validate this key tradition, as critics and believers alike watched closely.

The Trophy of Gaius emerges -

As archaeologists delved deeper, they found a structure beneath the altar that fit descriptions of the Trophy of Gaius. Pope Pius XII declared with confidence that Peter’s tomb was found, but scholars remained uncertain.

Diving deep -

The excavations took more than a decade to complete, during which 22 tombs belonging to the ancient Roman necropolis were identified and restored. The tombs had been incredibly well preserved.

A sudden discovery -

While excavating beneath the Trophy of Gaius, archaeologists came across an underground cavity which they assumed to be Peter’s tomb. However, they only found coins left behind by pilgrims, and a few skeletal remains outside of the tomb itself. The bones were moved elsewhere.

A guarded proclamation -

Despite the Vatican’s enthusiasm, Pope Pius XII acknowledged in 1950 that proving the bones belonged to Peter was impossible. Still, he emphasized the historical significance of the tomb itself and framed the findings as spiritually definitive rather than scientifically.

Wall G -

Alongside the bones and coins, a wall of Christian symbols and graffiti was also uncovered. They were dated back to the time of Emperor Constantine’s construction, but they were difficult to read and interpret. The graffiti has since come to be called Wall G.

Secrets -

Researchers studied the graffiti wall in the hopes of linking it to Peter, and they uncovered hidden messages from persecuted Christian believers. After careful analysis, the researchers decoded over 20 Christian symbols and phrases, which, they argued, pointed unmistakably to the veneration of St. Peter.

Forgotten bones rediscovered -

The research also revealed the skeletal remains found earlier that had been overlooked. The bones were reexamined and it was discovered that they belonged to an elderly man. The prestigious wrapping of purple wool hinted that the remains were treated with great reverence.

Woolen mystery -

Analysis of the wool fabric, intertwined with gold, suggested the bones were specially enshrined. The researchers believed this indicated Peter’s revered status, and announced their findings with confidence. But critics questioned whether the evidence truly proved anything.

Pope Paul VI’s announcement -

In 1968, Pope Paul VI declared the bones as Peter’s. The research lent credibility, but doubt still persisted. Despite the pope’s statement, some remained unconvinced and argued that there were too many gaps in the evidence to consider it definitive proof of Peter’s identity.

Ambiguous graffiti -

During excavations, a fragment of the graffiti (which contained Greek letters) became detached. The text was incomplete, but archaeologists restored it as PETROS ENI ("Here is Peter"). Some scholars disagreed, however, and argued the opposite meaning could also come from the incomplete inscription: PETROS ENDEI ("Peter is not here").

Memorial, or martyr’s symbol? -

While it seems logical that Peter’s burial site became a venerated memorial, uncertainty persists over whether the discovered remains belong to him. The entrance to St. Peter’s tomb marks an area steeped in Christian reverence, but ultimate proof of his presence remains elusive.

The Vatican maintains a delicate balance between religious faith and empirical evidence. Despite intense efforts to confirm Peter’s burial, definitive proof continues to elude researchers. The debate remains alive among scholars, believers, and skeptics.

For centuries, the Vatican necropolis was a revered space, but modern archaeology has both supported and questioned many of the Church’s ancient claims. Spiritual tradition and scientific scrutiny will continue to battle through the decades as they try to understand what happened to St. Peter’s body.
