What do animals know about death? It's a question Charles Darwin himself pondered. "Who can say what cows feel, when they surround and stare intently on a dying or dead companion?" the biologist wrote.
Indeed, animals have complex relationships with death, and recent studies suggest they may understand it more than we thought. Behaviors like ants attending funerals and whales carrying their dead hint at a deeper understanding of mortality.
