Israel dismisses genocide accusations as unfounded

Pope Francis has called on the global community to investigate whether Israel's military campaign in Gaza amounts to genocide against the Palestinian people, marking some of his most direct criticism of Israel's actions during its year-long conflict.
"We should investigate carefully to assess whether this fits into the technical definition (of genocide) formulated by international jurists and organizations," Pope Francis stated in excerpts published by the Italian daily paper La Stampa. The pontiff went further, noting that some international experts believe that "what is happening in Gaza has the characteristics of a genocide."
Israel rejects accusations of genocide in its Gaza campaign, stating that its actions are focused solely on targeting Hamas and other armed groups.
It all began when, just hours after Hamas' attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, Israel launched airstrikes on the Gaza Strip. Just 20 days later, Israel began its destructive ground invasion. The war on Gaza has continued a year on, producing one of the most devastating humanitarian crises, requiring almost two million residents to flee constant bombardment. Hamas' attack killed around 1,200 people and took about 250 individuals hostage; for its part, Israel's military response has killed more than 42,000 Palestinians.
