The history of Yugoslavia is marked by unity, conflict, and eventual dissolution. Formed in 1918 as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, Yugoslavia aimed to unify South Slavic groups. Over the decades, it endured monarchy, Nazi occupation, and communist rule under Josip Broz Tito. Ethnic tensions simmered beneath the surface, and by the early 1990s, Yugoslavia disintegrated into brutal wars, shaping today's independent Balkan nations. These countries, though sovereign, continue to face the complex legacy of the Yugoslav conflict.
