In June 1981, a purported series of apparitions of the Virgin Mary turned a small town in Yugoslavia into a popular site of Catholic pilgrimage. The alleged visions also sparked a confrontation between the Catholic Church and communist authorities in Belgrade. Over 40 years later, and despite the controversy surrounding the event, the Vatican has finally acknowledged the "spiritual fruits" that emerged from the episode, though it stops short of saying the apparitions were supernatural in origin.
