Lice have coexisted with humans and their ancestors for 25 million years. These parasites have evolved to adapt to our behaviors and match them, all to make them highly efficient in clinging to and thriving on human hosts.

Studies show that lice have recorded their evolution alongside humans in their genes. For example, lice in the Americas are a hybrid of those once carried by Native Americans and other lice ferried by European colonists across the Atlantic.

Head lice vs. body lice -

Around 170,000 years ago, lice diverged into two species as humans began wearing clothes. Head lice became specialized in living on human scalps, while body lice adapted to live on clothing. Both species remain separate and do not interbreed.

Specialized parasites -

Head lice spend their entire life cycle on the human scalp, feeding on blood and laying eggs. They are not considered serious health threats but can cause localized infections through excessive scratching that introduces bacteria into the skin.

Eradicating lice -

Shaving -

The only guaranteed way to eliminate head lice is by shaving the head, as lice cannot survive without hair. This is a rather extreme option, but it is (thankfully) unnecessary since there are more practical treatments available for dealing with lice infestations.

Combing -

One effective method of lice treatment is using a fine-toothed louse comb to remove lice and nits (lice eggs). Conditioning the hair before combing helps, and regular combing over several days can eventually rid the scalp of live lice and eggs.

Over-the-counter treatments -

Various over-the-counter treatments (such as shampoos and lotions) are available to treat lice infestations. These products, approved by the FDA, can kill both juvenile and adult lice. Persistent cases may require more intensive or repeated treatments.

Insecticide -

Topical lice-specific insecticides (known as pediculicides) can kill lice by paralyzing them. While these insecticides have been effective, some lice have developed resistance to certain types.

Resistance -

Similar to the way lice have evolved with humans, they are gradually developing resistance to certain insecticides. When many people frequently use the same products for lice, the parasites eventually develop mutations that allow them to survive treatment.

New treatments -

As lice develop resistance to older treatments, scientists continually endeavor to develop new treatments to outpace the parasites' ability to adapt.

Dimethicone -

For those avoiding insecticides, dimethicone-based products offer a safe, effective alternative. Dimethicone works by suffocating lice and has been shown to kill up to 90 percent of live lice and eggs in some studies.

Heat -

Heat can also be used to treat lice, but personal hair dryers should be used with caution. While heat can kill lice, improper use of hair dryers can cause burns before effectively eliminating the lice, which makes this method rather risky.

Home remedies -

Home remedies like mayonnaise and Vaseline are commonly touted as lice treatments but are not as effective as approved insecticides. They may kill some lice but lack the efficiency and long-lasting effects needed to fully treat an infestation.

Extreme home remedies -

Some individuals turn to dangerous substances like kerosene or gasoline to treat lice. These extreme remedies are hazardous and can cause serious harm. Experts strongly advise against using such substances.

Natural resolution -

The likelihood of experiencing a persistent lice infestation is low. Even without treatment, many infestations naturally decline on their own over time, although experts recommend treatment to alleviate discomfort and prevent the spread of lice to others.

Social stigma -

One factor that has also inadvertently added to the spread of lice is social stigma. Many people (especially children) feel embarrassed about having lice, and so they refrain from mentioning it. This could result in a larger outbreak that spreads to more people.

Public health campaigns often aim to educate parents, teachers, and children about lice to reduce the stigma associated with infestations. Raising awareness about the limited health risks and effective treatments can help diminish the social embarrassment tied to these parasites.
