Apply for or renew your passport ASAP -

In order to be eligible for a visa, most countries require you to have a passport with at least six months of validity left on it beyond your final travel date. Go ahead and check this item off your to-do list so you aren't stranded last minute waiting for the government to process your information and issue you a passport.

Find your new home -

Take time to research what's out there. Relocating for work usually means you know where you're going to be living. Think, though, if you want to be close to work or a little bit further out and what transportation options you have available.

When you're moving abroad with a company, be sure to research the cost of living in the new city. Will your current salary suffice, or do you need to ask for a raise to cover living expenses? Knowing what to expect can prepare you in many ways.

Every country has its own way of handling healthcare. It's crucial to know ahead of time what you'll be working with. Though none of us expect to be sick or get injured, at some point its bound to happen.

Contact your bank so they know not to flag or block your cards. Also, speak with them about your move and if there are any rules you should be aware of given your residence will be outside your home country.

Your current phone plan likely won't work in your new home country. Even if it does, it's unlikely you'll use it because it'll be extremely expensive. Between roaming charges and usage fees, you'll run up quite the tab.

It may be helpful to hire an accountant if you don't already have one. They can help you with everything from your salary and income to taxes and anything in between. Look for someone specialized in your home country and new host country for added ease.

In addition to hiring an accountant, it's important to research tax implications and obligations on your own. Moving abroad may mean your income is double taxed or that you have certain paperwork you need to submit.

Make copies of important documents -

Making copies of your important documents is important and could save the day in the future. Be sure to print hard copies and scan digital copies for when you don't have access to the hard copies or original document.

Study how negotiations work -

Within a business setting and even personally, knowing how to negotiate can prove useful. Research and study how negotiations are typically done in your new country, as they could be completely different than what you're used to.

Find a community -

Finding a community before and after your move can be life-changing. Having people nearby who understand you and your struggles can be very powerful. There are often in-person and online groups you can join.

If the country you're going to speaks a different language then it can be extremely helpful to complete a language certification and at least learn some basic language skills. While you may communicate predominately in English, learning some of the local language can show that you care.

Many countries have organizations and groups specifically for professionals from abroad who want to integrate into the local community. Use social media, word of mouth, and whatever other means you can to find these organizations and get involved.

Before you move and when you arrive, make sure the little details are taken care of. For example, do you and your family have a dentist you can go to? A safe, well-rated school for your kids? Ensuring a happy and healthy life will help you enjoy your new home.
