Sharks are wild and unpredictable creatures, often known for their reputation for attacking surfers, instilling both fear and fascination among beachgoers and marine enthusiasts. While sharks are deadly predators, attacks on humans are relatively rare. However, it's still important to remain vigilant when visiting beaches known for shark activity.
A shark attack in Egypt’s Red Sea resort town of Marsa Alam, Egypt, killed one foreigner and injured another, the Ministry of Environment reported Sunday.
The eastern Egyptian resort town, popular among divers, was the site of the attack, which occurred in "deep waters outside the designated swimming area," according to the ministry. While the ministry identified the victims only as foreigners, sources reported they were Italian nationals, citing another unnamed source from Italy's foreign ministry.
Egyptian officials stated that the two tourists were taken to a hospital in Port Ghalib, about 30 miles north of Marsa Alam. Authorities also announced that the swimming area in Marsa Alam will be closed while the incident is investigated. According to data from the independent Shark Research Institute, there have been four confirmed shark attack fatalities in the Red Sea over the past 10 years.
