Volcanoes are truly some of nature’s most formidable forces. While the world is certainly full of some dangerous volcanoes that can turn away even the most hardened traveler, there is one in particular that has captured our attention: Mount Etna. The Sicilian volcano is in the media once again due to its recent eruption starting late Wednesday, August 14, and canceling all flights to and from Catania Airport due to safety and visibility issues, virtually shutting down the airport on one of Italy's biggest public holidays, Ferragosto, celebrated on August 15, and canceling holiday plans for many passengers.
This European marvel may not be the most dangerous in the world, but it's still had its fair share of destructive eruptions. Click through the gallery to learn all about them and see what Etna is up to today.
