As a result of a potential ceasefire agreement with Israel, a senior Hamas official has released a list of 34 hostages that they would be willing to release, should the ceasefire go ahead. On December 5, they also posted a video of Liri Albag, who was taken hostage along with six other soldiers from the Nahal Oz army base on October 7, 2023. During the video, she urges Israel to make a deal.

Among the 34 that could be released are children, 10 women, and 11 elderly men. On December 4 and 5, Hamas reported that an Israeli airstrike killed at least 100 people, including some of the child hostages on the list of 34 names. So it is not known how many of them remain alive. Some have also been reported as being sick.

The list of hostages has been released to the media, and according to Hamas, to Israeli officials. However, the Israeli prime minister's office denies this and has said, "The list of abductees published in the media was not passed on to Israel by Hamas … To date, Israel has not received any confirmation or comment from Hamas regarding the status of the abductees on the list."

Hamas has said the return of hostages depends on a permanent ceasefire deal. Ceasefire negotiations have resumed in Doha, Qatar, but with little progress. A total of 251 hostages were taken on October 7, 2023, meaning those that remain have been in captivity for 15 months.
