The Taiwan Defense Ministry reported Monday that multiple formations of Chinese naval and coast guard vessels have been operating in the Taiwan Strait and the Western Pacific. The activity comes shortly after Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te made unofficial stops in Hawaii and Guam during a South Pacific tour, drawing criticism from Beijing.
China has strongly opposed Lai’s visit, labeling him a "separatist." The trip followed US approval of new arms sales to Taiwan, prompting Beijing to threaten "strong countermeasures." Taiwan’s government rejects Beijing’s claims of sovereignty over the island, while China has vowed to achieve "reunification," including the use of force if necessary.
