The Victorian era, the period between about 1820 and 1914 corresponding roughly but not exactly to the period of Queen Victoria’s reign (1837–1901), saw Great Britain transformed from a largely rural, agrarian society into an urban, industrial one. Great technological advances were made during this time span, creating a wealth of highly specialized employment opportunities. But Victorian Britain also witnessed abject poverty where the only chance of earning a living often meant undertaking some of the most dangerous and menial jobs, with a wage to match. So, what were some of the most desirable occupations of the era, and those that nobody wanted?
