In the past decade, the global refugee population has more than doubled to 36.4 million people. But a common misunderstanding is where they flee. The reality is that people affected by the world's largest refugee crises often aren't able to make it to high-income countries in Europe or North America. Instead, they take shelter in neighboring countries. However, the escalation of the war in Ukraine has changed things a bit.
But this social crisis carries risks. On January 7, a German court heard a couple's confession to killing a 27-year-old Ukrainian woman and her 51-year-old mother in order to abduct the younger woman's baby. The defendants admitted to planning to kidnap the newborn and claim her as their own after multiple miscarriages and failed fertility treatments to have a daughter.
"I regret everything I've done," the man said in a statement read by lawyers. "We really wanted to have a daughter together, that was my wife's most fervent wish." His wife added, "I made a big mistake." The indictment reveals that the couple had long hoped for a daughter. They already had four children together.
