The Great War (1914-1918) shaped a generation of young people who were coming of age. In the aftermath of experiencing the horrors of war firsthand, there was much disillusionment and lost faith, leading many to become aimless, reckless, and focused on material wealth. Many American artists and writers of the time moved to Paris, which represented a more liberal way of life compared to US conservatism. This class would capture the excesses and hedonism that defined their generation, as well as bigger societal and cultural themes of the time.
