A ceasefire deal has been reached between Israel and Hamas. According to Qatari officials, who have acted as key mediators and are due to hold a news conference, the deal will end 15 months of war in Gaza and see the release of the remaining Israeli hostages.

The agreement will allow hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians to return to Gaza City and southern Gaza. It will also supply them with 600 trucks of aid, medical supplies, and tents. The deal could also include 50 fuel lorries that would be used to operate the remaining hospitals and begin to repair the problems caused by the war, such as lack of power and sewage systems.

US President-elect Donald Trump has taken to the platform Truth Social to say, "WE HAVE A DEAL FOR THE HOSTAGES IN THE MIDDLE EAST. THEY WILL BE RELEASED SHORTLY. THANK YOU!" It is believed there are 94 hostages still being held, 34 of whom are presumed dead. Israel is also expected to release around 1,000 Palestinian prisoners.

The war was triggered when Hamas led an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Around 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage. Israel then launched a military offensive in Gaza and, as a result, more than 46,500 people have been killed.
