Water, just like metal, has the ability to conduct electricity. Therefore, if you find yourself in a pool, lake, or any water source during a thunderstorm, you are exposing yourself to a significant risk of experiencing an electric shock.

To stay safe, it is advisable to get low, but lying on the ground during a thunderstorm should be avoided. Even at a distance of 100 ft (30m), the electric current running along the surface of the ground can still be lethal.

Human bodies can't store electricity, so if you come in contact with someone who was hit by lightning, you won’t be electrocuted. Make sure they're breathing, elevate their legs slightly, and call for help.

Protect yourself when riding a bicycle or motorcycle by pulling over and waiting for 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder before continuing your journey, even if you're almost home.
