Nun arrested for involvement with crimes linked to Italian Mafia

A 57-year-old Italian nun, Anna Donelli, has been arrested on suspicion of working with a criminal gang that is associated with ’Ndrangheta, the most powerful Mafia network in Italy.
Donelli has done extensive volunteer work in prisons across the country, and in February won a “Golden Panettone” civic award for her work. She has now been accused of using her connections to gain access to penitentiary facilities and pass information from the gang to its associates in San Vittore prison in Milan.
This gang is thought to be linked to ’Ndrangheta, which originated in Calabria and is now one of the world’s richest organized crime groups. The nun was arrested along with 24 other people, including a former councilor, a former politician, and a ruling coalition partner. They have been accused of a list of crimes including money laundering. So far, US$1.9 million (€1.8 million) in illicit earnings has been seized.
