China discovers gold deposit worth over US$80 billion

Approximately 1,100 US tons (100,000 kilograms) of gold ore has been discovered in central China, making it the largest and most lucrative gold reservoir in the world.
The gold ore is said to be of extremely high quality, containing almost five ounces of gold for every US ton (142 grams for every 100 kilograms). For context, 0.2% of gold is considered to be high-grade. For this reason, it has been valued at approximately US$83 billion.
The Geological Bureau of Hunan Province uncovered the gold at a depth of 1.2 miles (two kilometers) in the northeast Hunan county of Pingjiang. Prior to this discovery, South Deep mine in South Africa was thought to be the largest gold deposit, with an estimated 992 US tons (899,927 kilograms).
