On Monday, December 16, a shooting took place at a private Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin. The perpetrator has been identified as 15-year-old student Natalie Rupnow. She reportedly began shooting a pistol in a study hall on Monday morning, killing a student and a teacher and wounding six others. Rupnow was found dead when police arrived, appearing to have taken her own life. Police are investigating her motives and reportedly reviewing a manifesto she left behind. There have been 202 incidents involving firearms on school grounds in 2024 so far, resulting in 56 deaths and 147 injuries.
Since 2020, gun violence has been the leading cause of death among children and teenagers living in the US, ahead of car accidents and illnesses like cancer. In 2022, 18% of childhood deaths (minors under the age of 18) resulted from firearms, which accounts for around 3,500 deaths. These shocking numbers put the US in a category all of its own. No other comparable countries have gun violence as a leading cause of death for children—in fact, it doesn't even make the top four list elsewhere.
In this gallery, we looked at statistics published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the FBI, among other organizations, to try and answer some pertinent questions about gun deaths in America. Click on and take a look at the numbers.
