LIFESTYLE History

It's hard to imagine a time when women couldn’t be doctors, diplomats, pilots, and a number of other professionals. But these achievements are relatively recent and were hard-won by women, who faced a great deal of opposition from a patriarchal society designed to work against them. Despite facing adversity, there are plenty of trailblazers who made history by becoming the first women in their professions.

A woman named Jessica Campbell made history at the opening of the National Hockey League's 2024-2025 season on October 8. The 32-year-old was named the assistant coach of the Seattle Kraken—the first woman ever to take on the role in the NHL. “The year ahead is going to be a lot of fun. But to know and to understand that obviously there’s still at the forefront the thoughts of other women and other people who have the same aspirations as I do,” she told NHL.com. “So, to carry that torch every day and keep my focus on being a coach, but it definitely puts meaning into the work.”
