Prisoner swaps occur between two countries, usually involved in a conflict of some sort, when they find it mutually beneficial to release political prisoners, prisoners of war, people charged with espionage, and others, in exchange for the same. This has been a common practice in most of modern history, especially during the Cold War, when espionage was a primary tactic. With major conflicts ongoing around the world, they're becoming more common once again,
In the early hours of Friday, August 2, three US citizens were reunited with their families on safe ground after a historic prisoner swap between Russia and several Western countries. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris waited on the runway with the families of the detainees as they were safely delivered home. The three American prisoners were journalist Evan Gershkovich, ex-marine Paul Whelan, and journalist Alsu Kurmasheva. They were all arrested in Russia on spurious charges related to political dissent. Whelan was accused of espionage in 2018 and spent five years in a prison colony without trial. Gershkovich and Kurmasheva were both arrested after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine and were accused of acting as foreign agents for the US and spreading misinformation. They were released along with 13 other political prisoners, including several Germans and Russian dissidents. They were released in exchange for eight Russians being held in the US, Germany, Norway, Slovenia, and Poland. This is the largest prisoner swap to be negotiated between Russia and the US since the Cold War.
